Taking cover

The other day I was with my daughter and her 2 year old son, we had set out to go to the beach even though it wasn’t the best weather for sand and sea. However we pressed on until the rain became heavier and heavier and although my grandson was enjoying himself, my daughter wasn’t convinced.

I suggested we go under a shelter along the promenade and take some sand and stones with us so he could continue this delightful experience with his bucket, spade, rake and trowel. He was in his element, the rain didn’t matter to him. It was a joy though to be under cover and it made me think about shelter and how my work encompasses this structure. In fact my signature piece ‘ Under the Arches’ details just this. What interesting symbolism I pondered upon later on in the day. How this subject matter crops up in my work, how we wish to ‘take cover’ often from the vicissitudes of life itself.

My latest explorations then employ this motif taken from the rain shelter. I am using acrylic on board, it’s still work in progress so my next bog I may well be ready to show you what the pictures may have resolved.
