Long Last Art!

Permanence and the need for it or not?

Here is some interesting logic I read today, the pre-Socratic Greek philosopher Parmenides concluded the one true fact about the universe-and everything in it-is that it is permanent. Everything that is, always was and always will be. I think I feel encouraged by this, but then, it sounds a little like re-incarnation too, born as a cat, may come back as a whale….?

My first foray into art at school got me really passionate about making 1’ tall sculptures. In my case I made a viking and then went on to make a deep sea diver struggling with an octopus. The symbolism here was of either a warrior prepared to fight or of a  victim taken over by a sea creature with tentacles encircling around the victim. Me.  I was perhaps struggling to adapt to life in a very strict school. Working with clay on this scale was a dream come true. Later on, the permanence of making things in clay appealed to me as the objects would outlast me, and that seemed important.

Perhaps not so much of an issue now. Now the work is more of a celebration of colour and of the life that is held in each creation, undertaken in a spirit of adventure and love.

No picture needed. Look no further! Well go on then!
